Proof of Experience

With Elijah Johnson at the CTE Expo early speaker event
Before the Event
I expected to learn about what block chaining was and how it was used in practice.
Curiosity Before Attending
I was curious about the journey about this specific startup founder and how they got to their current position. I specifically wanted to know how networking played a role in their journey.
What I Saw
I listened to Elijah Johnson’s presentation to the CS classes.
Most Interesting Thing I Saw
What he said about being ‘delusional’ when pursuing our goals was interesting, as it wasn’t something I thought about that way before.
What I Learned
I learned about the power of discipline when we are trying to reach our goals through what he said about consistency and repetition beating random spurs of motivation.
What Surprised Me
I was surprised that he had just graduated from college and was running a startup with big projects so early in his career.
What Inspired Me
I was inspired by one of his final quotes, “start before you’re ready”. He told us that waiting for the perfect moment every time wouldn’t bring us to our goals, but if we use the resources, connections, and skills that we sometimes forget that we have we can get closer to our goals.
Personal Connection
I am interested in the applications of computer science in our day to day lives, something that SafeBallot is doing right now.
Interaction
Person or group I learned from: I learned from Elijah Johnson.
He explained how he used connections that he already had to grow his network and his business, such as how he met with the VP of a very big cybersecurity company through extended familial relations.
Depth of Experience
It inspired me to take action now, without waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment. It also reminded me of the importance of connections and networking in our journey towards our goals.
Connection to CS or Future Goals
The principles that Johnson adhered to when building his startup and in his general life can apply to me as well. Pillars like ‘stacking reps early’, ‘building while I learn’, and ‘thinking like an operator’ will benefit me in the years to come.
Final Reflection
This event was meaningful because I gained insight on steps I can take to grow and strive towards my goals from someone who was already working hard to reach their goals. Because of this event, I made a connection that will benefit me and my future ventures.
Biggest Takeaway
My biggest takeaway was that consistency, discipline, and resilience can help anyone reach their goals.
